Tropical Oasis: Designing with Exotic Flora

Every February we get the same email. The garden looks dead, nothing is happening, did we do something wrong. Almost always the answer is no — the planting was simply designed for one good month, and that month was June.
A border that only performs in early summer isn't a failure of maintenance. It's a failure of the plan. When every plant on the schedule peaks in the same eight weeks, you're buying eight weeks of garden and ten months of waiting, which is a poor return on what a planting scheme costs.
The fix isn't more plants. It's a different way of choosing them, and it starts by picking the hardest month first.

Why late winter is the honest test

Design for June and February takes care of itself, the reasoning goes. It doesn't. June is generous almost anything looks good with full leaf and long light. February strips the garden back to what's actually there: structure, stems, seed heads, bark and evergreen mass.

So we start there. Before choosing a single flowering perennial, we work out what the garden will look like on a grey afternoon in the second week of February, standing at the kitchen window. If that view holds up, the rest of the year will look after itself.

The importance of seasonal planning

The part people get wrong

Spacing. Almost every scheme we're asked to rescue was planted too far apart, then filled in with annuals for the first two summers and left patchy after that. Plant at the density the scheme was drawn for and accept that year one looks sparse that's the plan working, not failing.

The second mistake is buying big. A three-litre perennial catches up with a ten-litre one inside two seasons and costs a third as much, which means the same budget buys you three times the density. On a border of any size that difference is what separates a garden that reads as designed from one that reads as decorated.

Give it three winters

A planting scheme isn't finished on the day it goes in. It's finished somewhere in its third year, when the structure has bulked out and the perennials have found their spacing. Everything before that is the garden getting there.

Which is the real answer to the February email: nothing went wrong. It's just February, and the garden is doing exactly what it was drawn to do.
